It's a Jason Statham movie where the actor is once again seen paving his way to victory while sorting the good from the bad. So no prizes for guessing what lies in store: gun firing in loads and fist fights in aplenty. But then, Jason Statham has competition in Safe. And this competition is a pretty tough one for it comes from the little Catherine Chan.
With hardly any dialogues (in English) to herself, Chan actually keeps you asking for more each time she (or Statham) are missing in action. Of course, the two (Statham and Catherine) together make this gang war for the green bills in the bustling narrow bylanes of New York's China Town worth a watch. The action, on the other hand, is crispy and smart. As for the storyline, guess it was always meant to tread on safe ground... nothing that you have never seen before.

Jason Statham headlining a gritty, action thriller is as routine as the sun coming up. But the man has the role down to a science — whether he's a down-on-his-luck cop, former CIA agent, ruthless assassin or any of the other stock characters that open up the Pandora's Box of butt-kicking, Statham can deliver. Safe embraces these expectations, throwing together an amalgamated central character (Luke Wright, a currently homeless former NYPD cop who was secretly black ops, maybe assassin hired by the blah blah blah) who goes to battle with every bad guy New York City can offer. Russian mafia, Chinese mafia, corrupt cops — name the group, Statham breaks their tracheae. If that sounds delightful and fresh, Safe is a must-see.

What we have here is basically an American "Transporter," with Statham caught up in the most jaw-dropping, quick-cut fights you've seen in years. He plows through Russians on the subway, Chinese gangsters in a casino and cops in between, on the mean streets, which he navigates with dazzling automotive dexterity. Occasionally he stops long enough to make a threat."I'm going to do things to you that make me ashamed to look at myself in the mirror," he tells one villain. "When I'm done you won't even be the memory of a memory," he promises another. The dialogue and the characters are better than the plot. And the fights are better than even the one-liners.Yakin writes his story into a few corners, and the object of this quest, again having to do with numbers, is so pedestrian as to remind you that this is the guy who wrote "Prince of Persia" and the dreadful"Dirty Dancing"sequel.

But Statham makes Yakin's lines sing. And thanks to Perry, he brings the pain. In the world of B-movie action, Statham's still the safest bet there is.
