Cars : Expensive than Deserved

Emerging economy, India, has seen the rich become richer over the years, able to afford to shell out big bucks for four-wheelers. While foreign cars are undoubtedly more expensive most times, Indian vehicles aren’t too far behind either.

Check out some of these heavyweights that would make most of us think twice before getting one.

1. Force Motors Force One

Price: Rs. 10,72,041
Why pricey: Indian roads command big vehicles as a lot of the terrain is rough and uneven. As such, SUVs with off-roading capabilities offer buyers value for money. While the Force One by Force Motors is no doubt a heavyweight, it trails behind other names like the Tata Safari and Mahindra Scorpio in terms of performance. This isn’t to say that it’s all bad but with an over Rs 10 lakh price tag, Force One is quite a bit more expensive than others in its segment.

2. Mahindra Xylo

Price: Rs. 7,35,357
Why pricey: The Mahindra Xylo is an MUV that’s been making waves in India. The 7-seater vehicle directly competes with the Scorpio and Safari but falls short when it comes to features and tech specs. For its price, one would expect the Xylo to be equipped with plenty of goodies but that doesn’t seem to be the case. While the base model begins at Rs 7.35 lakhs, the top model commands a hefty Rs 10.25 lakhs. Simply not worth the money if you can get the Scorpio and Safari for an Rs 8 lakh price range.

3. Honda Jazz

Price: Rs. 5,71,975
Why pricey: Like all Honda cars, the Jazz is one good looking hatchback. Despite being fitted with a host of features, it’s hefty price tag has been its biggest drawback. Other cars in the segment like the VW Polo and Hyundai i20 are cheaper and offer consumers more or less the same features. Spare parts are expensive, increasing the cost of maintenance and service. If you can afford to shell out close to Rs 6 lakhs for the Jazz then you’re sure to get value for money. But considering the i20 begins at Rs 4.56 lakhs with enough features fitted in, the Jazz seems like the lesser choice.

4. New Ford Fiesta

Price: Rs. 7,33,245
Why pricey: Ford has revamped the Fiesta starting 2012 and the car looks much different than its predecessor. A welcome change, no doubt, but the over Rs 7 price tag seems a bit hefty considering you can get the Hyundai Verna and Honda City that offer more value. The new Fiesta also comes in a low cost model but it lacks the specs and features found in the City and Verna which are doing incredibly well in the market.

5. Maruti Suzuki Kizashi

Price: Rs. 16,86,712
Why pricey: Maruti Suzuki’s latest offering the form of the Kizashi has made us break out in a sweat with its massive price. Costing close to Rs 17 lakhs, it’s evident that the Kizashi is only meant for the wealthy. However, don’t expect it to come equipped with top of the chart performance and design. It lags far behind when compared to Honda Accord and Toyota Camry which are selling for a price that’s Rs 3 to 4 lakhs cheaper. The eagerly awaited Kizashi appears to have disappointed a few with its dismal results that none expected.

6. Fiat 500

Price: Rs. 14,92,867
Why pricey: Fiat’s offering in the form of the 500 has given fans of the automaker something to cheer about. But those with budgets may have to think twice before making that trip to the bank. The 500 carries a huge price of close to Rs 15 lakhs all thanks to the hefty import duty that has increased its cost by over 200 percent. How Fiat is going to be able to successfully market its latest offering is anybody’s guess. All we know is that unless you have money to blow, the 500 will be out of many people’s price range.

7. Renault Pulse

Price: Rs. 5,82,368
Why pricey: Renault’s effort to produce low cost cars seems to have hit a brick wall with its Pulse being about Rs 70-80 pricier than others in its class. Pulse is the company’s first small car in India and while we’re glad that Renault decided to target this segment, we can’t say the same about its nearly Rs 6 lakh price tag.

8. Volkswagen Beetle

Price: Rs. 21,45,799
Why pricey: When the iconic Beetle made its way into India, many rejoiced. Sadly, import duty has put it way out of the range of most, relegating the Beetle back to being a dream. Rs 21.45 lakhs is no joke and we can just hear Volkswagen lamenting the loss of many potential customers.
